SunRail Construction

What you need to know

SunRail is being built in two phases. Phase 1 is 32-miles from DeBary to Sand Lake Road in Orange County. Construction on Phase 1 began January 2012. Phase 2 will be built two sections: the north section from DeBary to DeLand, and the south section from Sand Lake Road through Kissimmee to Poinciana. Phase 2 construction is expected to begin in 2014.

Three types of construction is taking place: double tracking, grade crossing improvements and station construction.

  • Grade crossing improvements - improving the quality and safety at the locations where the street crosses the railroad. There are 96 grade crossings in Phase 1.
  • Construction on grade crossings requires closing the street that crosses the railroad. This work will take place on weekends to minimize the impact on commuters. Detours will be posted. Road closure and detour information is available here.
  • Station construction - there are 12 stations being built between DeBary and Sand Lake Road. Construction will typically take place during the day, as it would for any building construction.

Sound and vibration from SunRail construction will typically not exceed the levels from normal rail traffic and should not affect residences or business more than 300' from the tracks.

Staying safe during SunRail construction

DO NOT enter the railroad right of way for any reason - this is considered trespassing, and it is illegal and dangerous. The railroad right of way is usually marked by a fence or "No Trespassing" sign.

DO always stay at least 30' away from rail construction and trains.

DO NOT approach or try to communicate with railway workers at any time. If you need to talk with someone from SunRail, call Mike Wacht, SunRail public information specialist, at 407-487-4035.

DO use caution when near railroad tracks. Anytime is train time: trains can come from any direction on any track at any time - even during construction.

If you must cross railroad tracks:

  • DO look both ways and listen for oncoming trains
  • DO NOT stop on the railroad for any reason
